Two gospel megastars made their way to the West Coast for an annual event that draws huge crowds, local artists and gospel fans from all over the country. The 11th Annual Gospel Day at the San Diego County Fair is a celebrated outdoor festival at the seaside community of Del Mar. This year, headliners, Donald Lawrence and Tamela Mann made their first appearance on Saturday, June 27th in the Grandstand Stage on a day that reached more than 75,000.
They’ve joined the ranks of other stars such as Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Dottie Peoples, Mary Mary, Brent Jones and more – to share the gift of song with a diverse group of music lovers, gospel enthusiast and Gospel on Demand, G.O.D. radio hosts, Evangel, Walter Ko and Eddie Baltrip.
Lawrence, a musical architect and veteran songwriter/composer quickly reminded everyone why he is a trendsetter in the dynamic industry of gospel music. Known for chart-topping favorites like, “Encourage Yourself” and “Back to Eden,” this self-proclaimed musical innovator came to inspire through song along with his infamous group of session singers referred to as the “Company” of Donald Lawrence and Company, include Anita Wilson, Tobbi and Tommi, Floyd Wilkerson, Jason Nelson and more.
Tamela Mann can be described as a gospel “A-Lister”, record-breaking reality star and actress with a deeply dimpled smile. The humble songstress sang and testified her way into the hearts and minds of everyone in the infield at the fair as she sang fan favorites and breakout hits, “Take Me to the King”, “I Can Only Imagine” and finally “This Place” from her recent CD project, titled Best Days on Tillyman Entertainment.
The night’s performances will linger on the minds of many who witnessed incredible vocals, candid conversations about fears of never fulfilling a dream to sing from Tamela Mann or words of encouragement to live holy by Donald Lawrence. Plans are already underway to top the highlights of this years’ Gospel Day; get ready for 2016 lineup of artist and entertainers.
